Xiaomi 17 Ultra Review: Leica Imaging, 1-Inch Sensor, 200MP Telephoto
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra focuses on imaging breakthroughs, featuring a 1-inch Light Hunter main camera, a 200MP telephoto lens, and a Leica triple-camera system. Combined with LOFIC technology, it delivers clean and balanced night photography with excellent light and shadow control. Inside its slim 8.29mm body is a 6800mAh battery, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor and dual-channel cooling system ensure flagship-level performance. The Starry Green rear cover, inspired by mineral stardust textures, conveys a refined and premium aesthetic.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra series has been on the market for some time now, and many users who like it have likely already purchased one—especially the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition, which once received strong market feedback. However, from a purely practical standpoint, I personally recommend the standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra. There’s really no need to overthink it; keeping things simple is enough.
This phone is available in four color options: Black, White, Starry Green, and Cool Smoke Purple. Xiaomi officially promotes Starry Green the most, which is understandable given its unique manufacturing process. The entire rear cover is filled with starlike dots, making it look extremely cool. Judging from real-device photos, the flat display combined with the mineral-inspired granular texture creates a premium look and feel. If the frame could maintain the same level of craftsmanship, it would be close to perfect.
As for hardware, there is little to criticize. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 flagship processor is paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, forming a top-tier flagship configuration. Cooling is handled by a dual-channel 3D loop vapor chamber, which should provide solid thermal performance. That said, since it’s currently winter, it remains to be seen whether performance stays equally strong during hot summer conditions.
The display is a low-power sunlight screen measuring 6.9 inches with a resolution of 2608×1200. It supports 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling, Dragon Crystal Glass protection, a peak brightness of 3500 nits, and uses the M10 luminous material system. Overall, it’s a well-balanced, high-quality display with no obvious shortcomings.
Everything about this phone ultimately serves its imaging capabilities—specifically, the Leica professional triple-camera system. While I don’t entirely understand why almost every manufacturer emphasizes imaging so heavily in their Ultra models, I respect the approach. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra follows the same path.
On the hardware side, the front camera is a 50MP f/2.2 selfie lens. The rear setup includes three large-sensor Leica cameras: a 50MP 1-inch Light Hunter 1050L main sensor, a 200MP 1/1.4-inch telephoto lens with continuous optical zoom, and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. All lenses use Leica Summilux optics, significantly enhancing image quality by reducing ghosting and flare while delivering exceptionally clean visuals.
Let’s start with the 1-inch Light Hunter main camera. What does a 1-inch sensor mean? It means extreme light sensitivity—allowing it to capture details even in scenes where the human eye struggles to see clearly. This ensures sharp images with rich detail. Beyond that, it supports LOFIC ultra-high dynamic range technology, a compensatory technique that handles complex lighting more effectively. It prevents colors from being distorted by surrounding light sources and restores more accurate, natural tones.
In scenes such as molten iron sparks or fireworks, ordinary smartphone cameras often struggle—either crushing shadow details or producing messy highlights, with color accuracy suffering even more. With the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, however, these two technologies enable balanced highlights and shadows, resulting in clean and layered night scenes. The samples appear exceptionally clear, with smooth transitions in sparks, distinct firework colors, and well-defined contours even in dark areas—no muddy smearing, just natural lines.
Beyond still photography, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra has also improved its video recording capabilities, particularly in high-dynamic night video. It supports full focal-length 8K video recording, multi-focal 4K 120fps Dolby Vision video, and ACES LOG cinematic-grade video creation. On the practical side, it also offers AI-powered audio creation to meet personalized audio and video editing needs—bringing it closer to the iPhone’s creative workflow.
Now let’s talk about the 200MP 75mm–100mm telephoto lens. While the sample images may not be fully representative, the core advantage of 200MP is creative freedom. You can shoot without worrying too much about composition, lighting, or background, then crop afterward and still retain excellent clarity and image quality. The confidence that 200MP delivers is simple: shoot freely and create without restraint.
In addition, this 200MP telephoto lens is marketed as having “main-camera-level” capabilities. Built on a 28nm process with a large 1/1.4-inch sensor, its light-gathering ability rivals that of a traditional large-sensor main camera. When used across the four classic portrait focal lengths, it delivers stunning results. Combined with Master Portrait mode, it ensures high portrait completion—hair-level edge detection and vivid, realistic rendering are clearly visible.
Although the Xiaomi 17 Ultra does not dramatically upgrade Live Photos this time, it introduces zoom and slow-motion features that enable more dynamic camera movement. This gives simple photos a sense of “soul,” making them far more engaging than low-quality GIFs that sacrifice clarity and image quality. Just take a look.
Finally, there’s the 115° Leica ultra-wide camera. Feel free to judge the results for yourself—it provides sufficient resolution and performance for large-scene photography. What do you think?
Final Thoughts
Overall, while the Xiaomi 17 Ultra may not deliver a revolutionary upgrade across every aspect, its imaging improvements are clearly noticeable. Other supporting features are also impressive. For example, the 6800mAh Xiaomi Jinshajiang battery is packed into the device without significantly increasing thickness, and ergonomics remain well-balanced—8.29mm thickness and 223.4g weight speak for themselves.
Additionally, the IP66, IP68, and IP69 dust and water resistance ratings greatly enhance durability, reducing concerns about accidental bumps or drops. For users seeking greater emotional and creative value, Xiaomi also offers a professional imaging kit similar to that of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra—perfect for experiencing the joy of street photography.
