OPPO Find X8 Ultra Review: Lightweight Flagship with Dual Periscope Power

The first reaction when I got the Find X8 Ultra was “light.” Previous Ultra models were like a “brick,” poking uncomfortably in the pocket, but this time the Find X8 Ultra actually controlled the thickness to 8.78mm and the weight to 226g, nearly 1mm thinner than my previous Find X7 Ultra. The Moonlight White integrated glass back panel feels like a freshly peeled lychee, so delicate that it almost leaves no fingerprints. The camera module is also not as exaggeratedly protruding as the previous generation, and when placed on a table it will not “tilt its butt.” The lens arrangement on the back is very neat, with the 3x + 6x dual periscope telephoto occupying the core position of the module. The Danxia Original Color Lens in the lower right corner is like a small pearl, low-key yet hiding great ability.

The front screen is even “stunning at first glance.” The 6.82-inch 2K flat screen uses the X2 luminous material jointly developed by OPPO and BOE, with an extremely narrow 1.4mm black border, almost catching up to the iPhone’s level. The advantages of a flat screen need no elaboration — when scrolling Douyin, the edge of the picture will not distort; when gaming, there will be no accidental touches; especially when watching movies, with a peak brightness of 1600 nits, even under sunlight by the river, the subtitles on the screen can be clearly seen. I deliberately tested the dimming at low brightness — after turning on “classic low-frequency flicker,” the screen flicker is almost invisible, and looking at it for a long time doesn’t make the eyes sore. For a “phone-dependent” user like me, this is simply a blessing.

The most surprising part is still the imaging system. As the “heirloom treasure” of the Find series, this time the dual periscope telephoto has actually been upgraded again — the 3x periscope uses the Sony LYT700 sensor, with 150% more light intake than the previous generation; the 6x periscope even uses an inverted structure, directly increasing light intake by 2.5 times. When I went to the park to photograph lotuses on the weekend, using the 3x telephoto, I could count the dewdrops on the petals, and even the veins on the lotus leaves were clearly visible. Using the 6x telephoto to shoot the distant pavilion, I could see the “No Smoking” sign on the column clearly, without the slightest blur from digital zoom. At night when photographing portraits, my friend’s face was lit by the yellow light of a streetlamp, and the Danxia Original Color Lens could actually distinguish the color temperature of the streetlamp from the foundation on her face, rendering the skin very naturally, unlike my previous phone which made people look “bloodless.” As for that 1-inch main camera, when photographing the riverside night scene, it could capture both the reflections on the water and the distant high-rise buildings, without losing details in the dark areas and without overexposing the streetlights in the highlights — even clearer than the mirrorless camera I used before.

In terms of performance, the strength of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Edition needs no explanation. I tested “Genshin Impact” at the highest graphics + super frame rate, ran around Sumeru City for half an hour, and the frame rate was stable at 89fps. The back of the phone felt a bit warm but absolutely not hot to the touch. With 16GB LPDDR5X memory, switching between WeChat, Douyin, and Genshin Impact had almost no delay, as smooth as flipping through a book. The most unexpected part is the battery life — the 6100mAh Glacier Battery: starting with 100% in the morning, playing “Honkai: Star Rail” for an hour at noon, browsing Xiaohongshu all afternoon, and still having 53% power left when I got home at night, with no need to carry a power bank. The 100W super flash charge is also very powerful — in the morning, if I find the phone out of battery, in the time it takes to brush my teeth, it charges 30%, enough to last until I reach the office.

Speaking of details, this time the physical shortcut key is also very considerate. The previous three-stage switch has been changed to a customizable shortcut key. I set it to “one-click camera launch” — double-press when the screen is off to directly enter the shooting interface, so I no longer need to frantically look for the camera icon when photographing barbecue. There is also the “AI One-Click Flash Note” function — when browsing Xiaohongshu and seeing a delicious food guide, pressing the shortcut key saves it, and it can automatically extract the address and recipe, much more convenient than my previous “Favorites.”

Of course, the Find X8 Ultra is not perfect — at 226g, holding it for a long time does make the hand a little sore, but for a flagship with a 6100mAh battery and dual periscope telephoto, this is already the optimal balance of “having both fish and bear’s paw.” And that physical camera button, although its pressing feel is not as strong as the iPhone’s, its sliding zoom function is very practical — when shooting distant scenery, a gentle swipe adjusts the zoom, more convenient than poking at the screen with a finger.

As a digital veteran, I think the OPPO Find X8 Ultra has truly grasped “user needs.” The flat screen solves the pain points of curved screens, the imaging solves the pain points of night portrait photography, the battery life solves the pain points of charging, and it even takes into account both weight and thickness. If you want a flagship that “can take great photos and be used with ease,” then the Find X8 Ultra is definitely one of the most worth buying models this year.
